In February of 1945, in the midst of WW2 in Iwo Jima, Japan, a regiment of the US Marines climbed to the top of Mount Suribachi to capture it for the United States Military. A photograph of the event was taken, and when it was later released, a sculptor named Dr. Weldon was so moved by it he decided to create a sculpture for display in Washington D.C.
